Wrap-Up: 13% Project

This past Christmas season, Anchor Church took on the 13% Project, asking church members to prayerfully consider setting aside 13% of their Christmas budget to bless others. The number was chosen based on an article in the Seattle Times stating that the cost of living in Seattle had risen 13% in only two years. As a church we were able to bless a struggling family by purchasing all the items on their Christmas wish list, ensuring that the two children had plenty of presents to unwrap under the tree. We also filled over two dozen handmade stockings (sewn by church members) with warm socks and other items that we donated to Family Works, a local non-profit working with homeless men, women and children. The stockings were passed out to the homeless on Christmas Day. We share this not to pat our own backs, but to show how God is working through our church to love and bless those in need. We know that all we have is a gift from God and it is a blessing to share that with our city. We pray that God will continue to open up opportunities for Anchor Church to love and reach out to Seattle and the people here who so desperately need Him.

13% For Seattle

In a recent article on the Seattle P.I. Blog stated the cost of living in Seattle has increased 13% since 2009.

Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and my burden is light." What would it look like to follow Jesus' by offering to carry the burdens of others to free them from their weariness. How much more easily a person can come to hear and accept the Gospel if those who are sharing it with them have first relieved some of their worry and stress. How much more genuine an invitation to a transformed life in Christ when we lead by humbly following Christ's example.

So what if we did it? What if everyone in Anchor Church committed to using 13% of our Christmas budgets to bless Seattle? There are people here in our own city who desperately need help. These are our neighbors who are trying to hold on to their homes; our co-workers who don't have health care and are facing mounting bills; the person we sit next to on the bus who can't afford to fix their car; the parents at our PTSA meetings who are wondering how to explain to their kids why there won't be gifts this year under the tree. These are people we talk to everyday at the grocery store or the bank or the cleaners without ever knowing the pain, fear and struggle going on under the surface.

Times are tough for everyone. We live in an expensive city that desperately needs Jesus. We can't solve all of our city's problems, but we can make a difference for some who are struggling. I hope you'll join us this Christmas in blessing our neighbors.

Three ways you can get involved

1. Partner with you community group to relive a need that you or someone in your group is aware of.

2. Anchor is sponsoring a family in need from the Wallingford Boys & Girls Club with many needs that you can help with.

3. We are assembling care stockings geared towards helping homeless people for Family Works, a food bank in Wallingford.

4. You can give finically to this work by on Sunday or through the mail (8560 Greenwood Ave N #804, Seattle, WA 98103) and indicate that it is for 13%.

You can find more info on The City or by emailing life@anchorseattle.org.

Anchor Church Needs Jesus, So Let's Fast Together

"A Christian fellowship lives and exists by the intercession of its members for one another, or it collapses." Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Anchor Church is a community of people that desires to know Jesus and wants others to know Jesus; the only way either of those things happens is by and through the work of Jesus.

Sunday I preached on feasting and fasting and called our community to commit to fasting and praying each Wednesday. We fast because we are needy for Jesus. We don’t fast because we are strong, we fast because we are weak. We abstain from the gift that is food because sometimes our appetite for food is greater than our appetite for the Person who gave us the food. We don’t live only on food, “but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).

When we fast we demonstrate our dependence on Jesus. We don’t fast to earn anything from Him. We fast because we need Jesus more than anything. It is in our weakness, neediness, and dependence that Jesus moves through us. Jesus is the one who has come to serve (Mark 10:45), and it is in our weakness that He moves through us (2 Corinthians 4:7).

We will commit every Wednesday to praying and fasting for Anchor Church, the other churches in our city, and for the people of Seattle.

For a short weekly fast, I recommend abstaining from food starting after dinner on Tuesday night, and then breaking the fast at dinner time on Wednesday. If health concerns or other circumstances prevent you from a food fast, I would encourage you to join us in fasting from something else, perhaps music for a day.
